Photography for Meredith Miller, Professional Cyclist
Meredith Miller, a fellow cyclocross racer and now Boulder resident, asked me to shoot images for her personal website that were not photos of her in cycling gear – which she has more than enough of. We went out with her two dogs and a friend into the foothills of Boulder in order to capture some environmental portraits that showed the non-cycling side of Meredith. Truly fun to work with and looking forward to our next shoot after the cold winter air has moved out of Colorado!

-From Kate Powlison, Research Analyst & Communications Coordinator for Bikes Belong
Needless to say, I’m really excited about how much everyone has enjoyed the video and more so regarding the awareness it’s brought to the People For Bikes campaign from Bikes Belong. Thanks to everyone who has shared, tweeted, reposted, and blogged about the video. One of the funniest parts has been the number of comments on the video regarding Ryan not wearing his glasses over the outside of his helmet straps – undoubtedly confirming the idiosyncrasies of the cycling world we love.
*****End of Update
If you’re interested in a video for you or your business, consider hiring us. We can provide both still and video production. I always put together a great crew and we’re fun to work with. You can email me with any questions.
I was recently shooting commuter cycling lifestyle images for a new Bikes Belong brochure and mentioned the concept of a ‘Shit Cyclists Say’ video. I’d been itching to put one together and thought the Bikes Belong campaign, People for Bikes, might be a perfect sponsor. Within 48 hours we had the green light for producing the video and late Thursday afternoon I contacted Ryan Van Duzer, who I’d met a handful of times crossing paths in the bubble, about being our ‘cyclist.’ He agreed but only had the next morning available to shoot – so in the same time I was exchanging emails with him, I was writing up the script we needed to shoot the next morning.
We filmed at North Boulder Cycle Sport, North Boulder Amante, and out the back of my Subaru on some of the lesser busy residential streets here in town. It was my first time working with the Panasonic AG-AC130 and shooting on an full video HD camera – my previous projects have been shot on HDSLR equipment such as the Nikon D7000. Quickly learning how to work with a wireless lav mic mixed with ambient mic – such as a tiny echo produced when we receive Ryan’s signal immediately and then the shotgun on camera mic would pick it up just a hair later.
Ryan Van Duzer and Spencer Powlison high fiving for the camera as we shoot 'shit cyclists say' for People for Bikes
We wrapped up shooting Friday afternoon and turned around the final edit within 24 hours, which was then approved Sunday morning and released at 8am Sunday the 22nd. As of this evening (15 hours later), we’re up to about 60k views on YouTube with a goal of over 100k. Unfortunately in the rush, I made the mistake of not duplicating the left audio channel of Ryan’s wireless mic when I cut out the right channel after deciding it wasn’t adding to the scenes. Normally something you’d go in and replace on the YouTube account, but the video had been released and had started it’s snowball effect in the world of viral videos.
It was a great experience going from having the pitch accepted to getting the final edit approved in less than 4 days and I couldn’t have done it without the people mentioned below.
Special thanks to everyone that helped out: Ryan Van Duzer (main character), Zach Edwards (BCS shoulder 1), Katie Arehart-Rose (BCS shoulder 2), Brandon Dwight (BCS shoulder 3), Pete Webber (stunt driver), Spencer Powlison (stunt cyclist), and Jeffrey McKinnon (Amante shoulder) as well as Boulder Cycle Sport and Amante Coffee.
Without further delay – the video:
Video Interview and Profile of Professional Triathlete Allen Gardner
This was a really fun piece to put together for the Breeze Bars Professional Development Triathlon Team out of Boulder, Colorado. We interviewed Allen ‘Broski’ Gardner next to the outdoor swimming pool at Rally Sport Health Club and also had Cameron Dye (training partner to Allen and professional triathlete) and Breeze Brown (Founder of Breeze Bars) sit down with us to talk about Allen. We also shot swimming video of Allen both above and below the water using the Nikon D7000, professional audio equipment and underwater enclosure. Great way to test out a new system and produce something that the Breeze Bars team can use!
Thanks to Allen Gardner, Cameron Dye, Breeze Brown (in order of appearance); Ashleigh Miller for assistant work, and Rally Sport/Grant Holicky for allowing us to shoot on their pool deck in the early morning.
Behind The Scenes for Elevations Credit Union
Marian in front of Twig Salon on the east end of Pearl Street in Boulder, Colorado
The latest project I’ve been working on has been for a new client, Elevations Credit Union, with creative direction from Weber Marketing Group in Seattle, Washington. The task was producing lifestyle portraits of actual Elevations Credit Union customers on location.
Studio 22 for Studio Shed
Studio 22 is incredible. It’s a Studio Shed modified by local Boulder artist, Kristin FitzGerrell. Studio Shed makes prefabricated space for uses like storing gear and outdoor toys to offices like this incredible art studio. Kristin specializes in ‘assemblage’ and her work in her own words goes like this:
In this studio the scrap bin is the supply closet. My mixed media collage and assemblage work justifies my complete and chronic infatuation with cast-offs. In my artistic practice I elevate the simplest of scrap to pedestal status and encourage you to see beauty where it had not been evident before. I find shape, color, and form inspiration in the most ordinary of places. My art materials come from an alley, a salvage yard, a recycle bin, a dumpster. I work and re-work these precious bits right down to the part that is left over from the part that was left behind.
I really enjoyed shooting this architecture project for Studio Shed and could’ve hung out inside of Kristin FitzGerrell’s beautiful art studio for the whole day – if I didn’t need to get to these edits!
Lifestyle Branding Photography
I was recently hired to capture healthy lifestyle branding images for someone starting up their own blog and in a greater capacity, a personal ‘brand.’ Not a new idea, but the forethought to have professional lifestyle images to coincide with their personal brand is really cool and something I can imagine being much more common down the road.
Howard Goldblatt for Chinese Literature Today
Howard Goldblatt is one of, if not the, top english translator of modern chinese literature – or so I am told. He also happens to be one of the more controversial. When I was contacted by Chinese Literature Today to shoot a portrait of Howard in his Boulder home, they wanted me to capture his personality. We came away with this shot as the winner.

Active Photography of Nicole Duke
Nicole Duke, a friend and fellow cyclocrosser, contacted me because she was in need of a few images for a feature that was going to be run in Women’s Adventure Magazine. As she was extremely busy getting ready for the cross season, we only had a little bit of time on a summer morning to capture some images in the local park.
Amy Ippoliti’s 90 Minutes to Change the World Videos
Wow, whirlwind of editing madness this past month has been. I’ve been tasked by Amy Ippoliti and her ’90 Minutes to Change The World’ crew to edit each of her 4 promotional videos leading up to her online training workshop. What is ’90 Minutes to Change The World’ you say? It’s a witty title for a course that provides professional development for yoga teachers – as many yoga classes are 90 minutes long and by making better yoga teachers, they’re making the world a better place. Pretty cool.
The best video, with the most creative license on editing, has been the last of the 4 – which is centered on preventing yoga teacher burnout. Burnout is the lifestyle where the teacher is flying to and from class, uninspired and stressed out, teaching crummy classes with minimal attendance – a vicious cycle. So I added a little voice over piece in the beginning with Amy that sets the tone for the video in a cool way I’ve seen done before in hollywood and other little places like that. Big thanks to Taro Smith for spending the time with Amy to provide all the footage we’ve used in the videos. AND a big thanks to the 90 Minutes crew for entrusting me with their beloved ideas! Without further adoo…video 4!
Let me know what you think!
