Active Photography of Nicole Duke
Nicole Duke, a friend and fellow cyclocrosser, contacted me because she was in need of a few images for a feature that was going to be run in Women’s Adventure Magazine. As she was extremely busy getting ready for the cross season, we only had a little bit of time on a summer morning to capture some images in the local park.
Amy Ippoliti’s 90 Minutes to Change the World Videos
Wow, whirlwind of editing madness this past month has been. I’ve been tasked by Amy Ippoliti and her ’90 Minutes to Change The World’ crew to edit each of her 4 promotional videos leading up to her online training workshop. What is ’90 Minutes to Change The World’ you say? It’s a witty title for a course that provides professional development for yoga teachers – as many yoga classes are 90 minutes long and by making better yoga teachers, they’re making the world a better place. Pretty cool.
The best video, with the most creative license on editing, has been the last of the 4 – which is centered on preventing yoga teacher burnout. Burnout is the lifestyle where the teacher is flying to and from class, uninspired and stressed out, teaching crummy classes with minimal attendance – a vicious cycle. So I added a little voice over piece in the beginning with Amy that sets the tone for the video in a cool way I’ve seen done before in hollywood and other little places like that. Big thanks to Taro Smith for spending the time with Amy to provide all the footage we’ve used in the videos. AND a big thanks to the 90 Minutes crew for entrusting me with their beloved ideas! Without further adoo…video 4!
Let me know what you think!

Amy Ippoliti Yoga Video Series – 90 Minutes to Change the World
I was recently hired to do editing for Amy Ippoliti’s video series: 90 Minutes to Change the World. For the first video, I had one day to turn around the footage and get a final version up for their enewsletter distribution the following day.
It’s been a while since I’ve truly dug deep inside Adobe Premiere, but it was good to see that it’s still very familiar and learning some of the new features didn’t take too long. For this project, we needed to clean up the audio a bit as well as some basic color correction on the video. I pulled the photo of Amy into Photoshop and created 3 layers and added some title motion for the intro graphic. Amy wanted some lighthearted sound effects and graphics in the video, so we added those as well to keep it from being too serious.
Here’s the final of the first video with 3 more to come in the next month!
Tough Mudder Event Photography for Dos Equis
- Racers on the downhill start at the Beaver Creek Tough Mudder
- The race starts with a loose, dusty decent on a steep ski run at Beaver Creek, Colorado
- Participants coming to the finish line after being shocked by hanging wires in the mud pit in the background
- The Dos Equis girls participating in photo ops with racers
- Responsible for handing out orange ‘Tough Mudder’ headbands to each finisher
- Tough Mudders got free headbands by the Dos Equis girls and jumped in line for a free beer in Beaver Creek, CO
- Continuous flow of Dos Equis for post-race complimentary beers for participants
- Please leave a comment if you know who this band is, they were killer. ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin…rocking out.
- Great Dos Equis branding on the inside of the event umbrellas for the post event party
Recently I was contracted to shoot the ‘Tough Mudder’ event in Beaver Creek, Colorado on behalf of their title sponsor – Dos Equis. Images that displayed the Dos Equis branding and target demographics interacting and of course, people enjoying their free post race beer. When you tell people you’re shooting for Dos Equis, it’s very – very easy – to get a smile. Great practice with the new D7000 crop sensor paired with the Nikkor 70-200 on the Black Rapid strap and primarily shooting the D700 w/a 24-70. Found my go-to event setup.
Stand Up Paddle Boarding Photography
A warm sun-drenched afternoon in Boulder, Colorado – perfect for stand up paddle board photography. Stand up paddle boarding, or SUP as the cool kids call it, takes place on a large surfboard-esque board. Big thanks to Corina, Kristen, Amanda and Andrew for making it look easy and to our friends John and Kim for loaning us a couple SUP setups to use!
Also a successful real first use of the water enclosure for the Nikon D700 – all of the images shown were taken through it AND it is surprisingly fun to float around in a PFD shooting at water level as the sun goes down.
2011 Teva Mountain Games Photos
A gallery of images taken while shooting at the 2011 Teva Mountain Games in Vail, Colorado. Great practice shooting live events with limited locations to shoot from and trying to come up with something unique. Waiting on the results of the Mountain Click photography competition that I entered…
Valmont Bike Park in Boulder, Colorado
Opening day at Valmont Bike Park was incredible. Too short on time to tell you all about it, you’ll just have to click through some images to get a feel for the morning. Shot on behalf of Mike Eubank. Big thanks to everyone involved with seeing this project through. Can’t thank you all enough.
If you’d like to use any of these images, please contact me and I’d be happy to help you out.
Work Update: Hudz, Fly V Australia Cycling Team, Boulder Creek Festival, more
- Hudz SRAM brake hood replacement product
- Hudz Shimano 6700 Brake Hood Replacement product
- For Hudz, SRAM Brake Hood replacement product
A quick update here, this week we have product photography for Hudz, headshots and team portrait for The Fly V Australia Professional Cycling Team, commercial images for Front-Center Marketing at the Boulder Creek Festival, a wedding reception Saturday night backed up to a wedding Sunday at Planet Bluegrass in Lyons. Here are a couple sample images from the product shoot with Hudz. My goal was to provide Lance Johnson of Hudz with an improvement over the current images on his site without creating something that was too far removed and therefore not confluent with the rest of the products’ galleries. A little more contrast and shadow, but the same angles.
Commercial Active Test Shoot with Professional Triathletes
Kristen Peterson and Allen Gardner have a future in active modeling if the whole professional triathlete thing doesn’t work out for them, but seeing their recent results makes me think they’re not too worried.
We got together on an early morning in Boulder, Colorado to drive up to Gross Reservoir for a commercial styled active photography test shoot. On the agenda: triathlete lifestyle images and edgier advertising shots as well. Half REI and half Nike meets Xterra meets fine art and whatever else comes along as I start pulling the trigger on my Nikon.
It was the first real test of the Elinchrom Ranger portable studio strobe system and it came through with flying colors. We managed to keep the deep octabox from turning into a sail while shooting the images of the athletes on the tree stump and the bare reflector pulled through with excellent range for the water images. Important note that we befriended Ranger Dave up at the reservoir who gave us supervised permission to enter the reservoir up to waist deep. Big shout out to Dave for being super cool and giving us a ride out of the ‘hole’ in the back of his ranger truck.
